List Of Universities Offering Pharmacy With Postgraduate Courses In Nigeria

Pharmacy schools that offer postgraduate courses in Nigeria
Pharmacy postgraduate courses
To practice as a pharmacist in Nigeria, one has to study in an accredited university of pharmacy. The study programme is long and practically impossible for anyone to learn everything the profession has to offer. This ranges from the undergraduate and postgraduate study.
There are more than 100 accredited universities by National Universities Commission (N.U.C). Of them, just 22 offer pharmacy programmes according the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria ( The P.C.N.) website. Courses each university offer varies and changes year in year out. This is because these universities grow with time. However, this post will list out the the universities that offer pharmacy course as a degree.
Undergraduate degree in pharmacy is presently two in Nigeria. This is not the case in United States Of America (U.S.A) where they are presently phasing out one of them. However, without wasting much time, let us see the universities.
Universities That Offers B. Pharm Degree
Below is the list of schools that offers B. Pharm degree otherwise known as Bachelor of pharmacy. The courses are all very similar with a slight difference. They have about six departments. Schools with five departments may have merged two departments into one reducing the departments from six. In addition, the course duration is five years of study, one year of internship and the optional National Youth Service Corps (N.Y.S.C) makes it seven years.

Universities That Offers Pharm. D. Degree
The University of Benin, (U.N.I.B.E.N), Edo State is the only school of pharmacy offering Pharm. D. degree for now also known as Doctor of pharmacy. Other universities are presently working on it. The course duration is six years of study, one year of internship and the optional NYSC.

Universities Running Pharmacy But Not In PCN website

The following universities have pharmacy programme. Yet they cannot be found in the official website of PCN, the regulatory body of pharmacy practice in Nigeria. They may have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (N.U.C).

Departments

The departments in these programmes are;
  • Pharmacognosy and traditional medicine (P.C.G)
  • Pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry (P.C.H)
  • Pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy (P.C.T)
  • Pharmacology and therapeutics (P.C.L)
  • Pharmaceutical microbiology (P.M.B)
  • Clinical pharmacy and administration/practice (P.C.A)
Universities Offering Postgraduate In Pharmacy
Not all the 16 universities offer courses in postgraduate programmes. The number of courses in postgraduate programmes also varies with each school. The duration of each PG programme varies depending on the nature of the degree. A future post on this blog will differentiate between the different types of postgraduate degree offered in Nigerian universities for pharmacy.
