The fear of school project is the beginning of hard work. The curiosity of what final year project is going to look like is normal among final year students. Making the right choice is a very difficult task. The choice is to put into account the right department and the right project supervisor to the right topic. All these choices if properly selected will make the student to achieve a very good project work that will be appreciated by the external supervisor at minimum cost to the student.

The choice of a department may not be feasible in some school of pharmacy. This is because so many students are scared of bench work hence prefer Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Administration where the project does not involve bench work but the use of a questionnaire. This is why faculty may decide on sharing students according to some criteria.
In addition, the choice of a supervisor may rest in the hands of the students, in other times, the faculty does that. However, when the students have the freedom of making those choices, the student will definitely put the above accounts into consideration.

After getting a project supervisor, the next thing is choosing a project topic. The project supervisor may provide the student with a topic if the student does not have any in mind. However, a student can ask the supervisor for a change when the student is not comfortable with it. It is also possible to change supervisor at an early stage when the semester has not gone far.

How To Choose A Project Topic In Pharmacy

  • Before choosing a project topic, pharmacy students should consider the nature of the activities in that department. There is a previous post on this blog that explained steps in deciding on projects on each department of pharmacy.
  • The next thing is to decide if to go for a bench work topic or a survey-using questionnaire. Note that not all questionnaire is easy. I remember when a student of pharmacognosy and traditional medicine was asked to get a survey of recipes used by about 20 herbal practitioners in a particular Local Government Area of Delta State. They all needed money to reveal it because they all felt he wanted to use it not for school but to treat someone. He encountered other problems along the line.
  • The topic you choose should be a topic you are very passionate about. Without passion, the possibility that you will be happy for the next one year is very low. To keep the fire up or motivation high, the topic should be what you like to do. I enjoy much about drug discovery and that was why I prefer the topic on herbal drug discovery.
  • If you are passionate about your topic without materials, you may not go far with the research. That is why I will recommend this fact that before you go ahead with the topic, consider the difficulties you may encounter. If they are what you can easily handle, then it is time to give a go. For instance, picking a topic on the effects of cassava on humans may be easy than species of plant only found in China.
  • Always consider the availability of resources in the topic. It is recommended that you do a little literature review before the accepting the topic. If there are no previous articles on it or related literature, be quick to dump it. Understand this fact that project works are made up of at least two compound sentence of different or related topics. The literature review should be of both or at least one of the topic. For instance, a project topic of ‘the cytotoxic effect of Euphorbia Graminea Linn on tadpoles’ contains three compound sentences. The related literature for the first sentence will be cytotoxic effects of other or of the same herbal extracts. Then secondly related literature will be previous articles on the use of the herbal extract of Euphorbia Graminea Linn. The last sentence will be related literature on tadpoles.
  • Specific topics are far better than topics that are wide. Those topics are mainly for masters or PhD work and not undergraduate. If you choose and your supervisor approves, it may be a two-year project for you. The cost of running those ones are much and require advanced knowledge and skills.

The above suggestions if put into consideration will be more than enough to guide you in choosing a topic that is easy, cheap and easy with your A grade.
