Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (P.S.N) is an association that most time confuses new pharmacy students in Nigerian universities. The difference between PSN and Pharmacists Council Of Nigeria (P.C.N) was difficult to comprehend.
This was mainly because very little information was found online. However, the function and scope of operation shall be explained in this article.

PSN is an association that is made up of undergraduate, graduate and registered pharmacist from Nigeria. It was founded in the year 1927. Ever since then, it has grown in so many aspects of the profession evolve.

Aims And Objectives Of PSN

According to the association, the following are the aims and objectives of the Association:

  1. To maintain a high standard of professional ethics and discipline among members
  2. To promote and maintain a high standard of pharmaceutical education in Nigeria
  3. To promote legislation for the enhancement of the image of the profession. This includes the interest of the profession and practitioners in Nigeria
  4. To calculate and disseminate statistical scientific and other information relating to pharmacy and public such in an official journal
  5. To advise on labour conditions relating to pharmacist
  6. To get more information on the PSN constitution

Function Of PSN

As for some of the more specific functions of PSN, these include:
1. Investigating acts of unethical misconduct and indiscipline among Pharmacists and making recommendations to the National Council;
2. Initiating sustainable policies and facilitating advocacy programmes that could launder the corporate image of pharmacists and pharmacy in general;
3. Evaluating pharmacy and drug statutes that should match the practitioners’ expectations;
4. Mentoring pharmacy students;
5. Designing sustainable schemes that could protect the future of pharmacists;
6. Alleviating pharmacists’ discomforts with the help of welfare programmes;
7. Conducting surveys and studies in areas of critical concern in pharmacy practice and so on

Who Are The Members

There are four set of members within the association. They are:
  1. Full Membership: They are registered pharmacist within Nigeria
  2. Associate Member: They are interns pharmacist
  3. Affiliate Member: Final year pharmacy students
  4. Honorary Membership: Open to pharmacist registered in their country of domicile.

Council Of PSN

Who makes up the council of PSN? They are:
  1. All states branch chairman/secretaries including the Federal capital territory
  2.  National Executive Members, immediate past president including unofficial members of     the association
  3. Chairman of the recognized technical/interest groups
  4. Director of pharmaceutical service/chef pharmacist
  5. The registrar of PCN
  6. All dean of accredited pharmacy schools in Nigeria
  7. National president of Pharmacy association Of Nigerian student (P.A.N.S)
  8. Representatives of teaching hospital and pharmaceutical service
  9. Chairman, board of fellows
  10. Director general of National institute of Pharmaceutical research and development
  11. Most senior pharmacist in pharmacy department from the Federal Ministry of Health
  12. A representative of the arm forces, the custom and the Nigerian Police Force. Such ones must be a registered pharmacist with PCN
  13. PSN representative in PCN
  14. Director General of National Agency For Food And Drug Administration And Control (N.A.F.D.A.C) who is a pharmacist or the most senior pharmacist in the organisation
  15. The executive secretary of west Africa post graduate college of pharmacy.
They meet 3 times in a year.


However, it should be noted that the association have the right to suspend any person whose name has been removed from PCN.
Also, all members are to pay a specified fee periodically according to their constitution
Fellow.
PSN is one of the organisation that award fellowship in Nigeria. This is based on a nomination from state branches and members.

How To Become A Member Of PSN

It is quiet simple. The form can be filled and submitted from their website. Alternatively, branches are empowered to registered new members. The application is accepted after the identity of applicants is verified.

The association is sub divided into various units that carry out various functions enhancing the smooth running of the association. Let us look at one of them.

Association Of Community Pharmacist (A.C.P.N)

Formerly known as Nigerian association of general practitioner pharmacy was the first of the technical group of PSN to be inaugurated in 1981 in Kaduna.

Members Of PSN

Members promote the profession by encouraging members to adhere to PCN laid down rules. Their services to the country are the control of community pharmacy within the country.

They investigate any breach of the constitution by members and make recommendation

Initiate policies and appraise all subjects matters affecting pharmacy
